Be Sober Intensive Programme
1 in 5 women aged 45 to 60 are now drinking at dangerous levels. This is more than any other age group and is now the largest growing group of problem drinkers.
Why is it that alcohol is so ingrained in our culture, especially for women? The ‘mummy wine’ trend is alive and kicking and reiterated in nearly all memes or advertisements for a tired mum. Social occasions seem to revolve around alcohol, with the common phrase of ‘let’s get together for a drink!’ or ‘it’s wine o’clock!’ frequently heard. A ladies weekend away often turns into a boozy 2 day drink fest, while an afternoon bottle of bubbles may seem like a great addition to a casual picnic. So what’s the problem with this exactly, you might ask?
After a drink your stress hormone cortisol goes up and can stay up all week, even if you’re only drinking on the weekend. This is why alcohol can really increase stress and anxiety levels in the days after. Moreover, the feel good dopamine spikes from the first drink get smaller over time and the serotonin deficit that you’re left with takes longer to pay off, leaving you feeling worse for days.
Stress is a significant risk factor for alcohol use. The irony is that women are so burnt out already from giving so much of themselves to work, family and friends, that the boozy ‘get togethers’ and alcohol fuelled weekends that they seek are just making them more exhausted. Once their exhaustion peaks, they suffer from overwhelm, depression, and burn out. Hello craving for more alcohol!
This is the addictive cycle of drinking. You drink, you feel better, you feel worse, you crave the thing that made you feel better (temporarily). Repeat.
Statistics show that women who drink have a higher risk for certain alcohol-related issues than their male counterparts. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon. In women, drinking is also associated with breast cancer, even at low levels of consumption.
Alcohol can also wreck havoc with women’s hormones. Alcohol interferes with phase 1 and 2 liver detoxification processes, and hence the metabolism and detoxification of old hormones. This leads to hormonal imbalance issues such as heavy/painful periods, PMS, bloating, mood swings, fatigue, weight gain, anxiety and depression.
